I paint portraits of people who happen to be birds, who in turn are kin to angels. Wise, alert, often provocative talismans and avatars, they are archetypal messengers and guardians who exist in the borderland between mystery and fantasy in their innate if elusive nature.
Recently, I’ve been reworking older pieces I have wanted to change but no longer own. Some bear no resemblance to the original painting while others are vaguely familiar in spite of their new palette. As the size of the work has grown into a much larger format, I’ve enjoyed experimenting with colored pencils and thicker brushes without losing my signature attention to detail.

Early into CoVid19, I was invited to participate in a playing card deck project through the Provincetown Commons and collage made sense. Then I got involved in various collage challenges on Instagram as the protests over the death of George Floyd began. Not all of these collages are a result of those challenges, but most of them include birds or things with wings. I also did a series of shadowboxes, some of which include images from my paintings. And while the collages are different from the bird portraits, there is a cohesiveness in the face of isolation and melancholy; it all ties together.
